How do you identify a tree in the wintertime? Look at bark, branching habit, buds, remains of fruit/seeds/nuts, leaf litter. Fifty-some species of trees grow at Fraser Preserve, most of them visible from the trails. How many we’ll see will depend on how far we get. The gravel road and ensuing trail change elevation by 100 feet, down and up again three times if we do the whole 2.5 mile trail, but many times we talk too much and run out of time to climb all the hills.

Fraser Preserve, a Nature Conservancy property, is at the north end of Springvale Road in Great Falls. Park on Allenwood, just before you reach the Preserve, and meet at the corner of Allenwood and Springvale. Dress for the weather, and bring water and anything else you need to feel comfortable walking on gravel and natural surface trails. There are no facilities available to us at Fraser. Please leave your dogs at home. Space limited, so we hope everyone can see and hear.
Margaret Chatham continues to regret that she was not “raised in the woods, so’s she knew ev’ry tree” but she has spent enough time at Fraser Preserve to be able to recognize most of its trees, and point out how they differ from each other.
Space is limited. Please park on Allenwood, meet at the corner of Springvale & Allenwood.
Please leave all pets at home.
Rain/Snow Date: Monday, January 29.
Leader: Margaret Chatham is a Potowmack Chapter Board Member, a story-teller and a long-time volunteer at Fraser Preserve.
