Level trails, some paved, lead you through the woods and meadows along Sugarland Run. Anything that is green in the winter is of interest, whether it is an invasive exotic plant like garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata) stealing a march on everyone else, or one of our evergreen natives like partridgeberry (Mitchella repens) or Christmas fern (Polystichum acrostichoides) or the early leaves of spring ephemerals like spring beauties (Claytonia virginica). We’ll take a look at whatever catches our eyes.

Sensitive Fern (Onocleus sensibilis) not green, but holding its spores ready to release on a suitable early spring day.
