We’ll climb up and down Fraser Preserve’s hills three times to look at ferns from tiny Ebony spleenwort (Asplenium platyneuron) and delicate Rattlesnake Fern (Botrypus virginianus) to stately Cinnamon Fern (Osmundastrum cinnamomeum). Of course, we won’t completely ignore all the other plants on the way. While many ferns can be seen from Fraser’s established trails, we’ll have to venture off-trail to see Adder’s Tongue (Ophioglossum pycnostichum), Broad Beech Fern (Phegopteris hexagonoptera) and Crested Woodfern (Dryopteris cristata), so come prepared for a bit of bushwhacking. Bring water, insect repellent, sunscreen, wear long pants & footwear that can take some mud — the usual.
