Over 50 species of trees grow at Fraser Preserve, and we’ll see most of them as we walk downhill into a stream valley, back up to a crest, downhill again into the Potomac River floodplain and back to our starting place (100’ change in elevation each time, total distance around three miles). While some trees have low, easy-to-see leaves, binoculars are helpful for viewing leaves on taller trees. We’ll pay special attention to tree bark: wear your poetry hat to help describe bark differences.
Fraser Preserve is a Nature Conservancy property, where on-trail hikers are always welcome — but please leave your dog at home for this hike, as dogs are limited to the gravel road.
Meet at the corner of Springvale Road & Allenwood Drive. Bring water, insect repellent and whatever else you need to feel comfortable walking up and down hills in the woods. Wear long sleeves and long pants and expect to walk through some mud.
