Wildflowers, Grasses, Sedges, Moss ID Walk and Garlic Mustard Pull with Jan and Gaylan Meyer

VNPS programs are free and open to the public; however, space is limited on field trips and RSVP is required through Eventbrite at https://vnps20160521.eventbrite.com

Partridge BerryOn this walk Jan will point out the blooming wildflowers, while Gaylan will identify a few distinctive sedges, grasses and mosses.  A few of the wildflowers that could be blooming at this time include Indian Cucumber Root, Partidgeberry, Yellow Stargrass and Lyreleaf Sage.  We will remove garlic mustard on the ridge above the trail.

Star GrassJan and Gaylan Meyer are Fairfax Master Naturalists and members of the VNPS Grass Bunch.  Jan has led invasive removal efforts at Fred Crabtree Park in Herndon and at Scott’s Run Nature Preserve.  Gaylan is now studying and cataloging bryophytes and lichens.  Both Gaylan and Jan are international birders.  They are in their third year of removing Garlic Mustard from the ridge above the Trillium Hollow Trail to preserve this wonderful lush area for viewing wildflowers.

Be prepared for pulling Garlic Mustard with garden gloves, dress for working outdoors, and use tick repellent.  Participants should also rinse any soil or mud from their shoes or boots before the field trip.  Scott’s Run is currently free of Japanese Stiltgrass, and one way it is introduced is by footwear with seeds attached.
