About Us
Welcome. We love Virginia native plants and enjoy telling people how to grow them.
This land where we live was historically Tutelo/Monacan. However our ancestors or ourselves arrived here in the New River Valley, we are learning a new way of managing the land for biodiversity which connects us to all who lived on this land and will live on this land.
This gift of native habitats that were managed so well for tens of thousands of years by the Tutelo/Monacan people and their ancestors now needs all of us working together to preserve it for future generations.
Please join us! We meet on the second Tuesday of the month except for the months of June through August. In 2024, fall meetings will be held at the Montgomery Human Services building in Christiansburg. See Upcoming Events for info about programs.
Meetings starts at 7 pm and feature a speaker who talks about native plant related topics. We also host field trips to local and not so local areas that support native plants. In September 2019 we started holding an annual native plant sale in Blacksburg. Some native plants will be available for sale prior to our Sept, Oct, and Nov 2024 chapter meetings.
The VNPS New River chapter was chartered in 2005. (See the VNPS Bulletin Vol. 24, No. 3, June 2005). View our very first chapter newsletter, the Fall, 2006 edition of The Apical Meristem.
The chapter flower is the Fire pink or Silene virginica. Its flowers attract hummingbirds and butterflies. Seeds attract juncos, pine siskins, sparrows, water pipits, and horned larks.
The New River Chapter covers the counties of Bland, Carroll, Floyd, Giles, Montgomery, Pulaski and Wythe and the towns of Blacksburg, Christiansburg, and City of Radford.
