The native plant demonstration garden in front of the YMCA Thrift store on North Main Street is a partnership between the New River Chapter of the VNPS and Plant SWVA Natives. The small planter boxes were overrun with weeds when a group transformed the box into a low maintenance native plant habitat. Nicole Hersch spent the colder months, coordinating with VT YMCA for installation, prepping the bed, and aquiring the plants. The beds were planted in April 2021 by David Bellangue, Pat Polentz, and Rosemarie Sawdon.
In the beds you will find: Baptista australis (false blue indigo), Rudbeckia fulgida (orange coneflower), Cornus sericea (Red Dogwood), Trandescantia virginiana (Virginia spiderwort), Penstemon digitalis (Foxglove beardtongue), Schizachyrium scoparium (little blue stem), Callirhoe involuncrata (poppy mallow), Clinopodium vulgare (wild basil).
