Montgomery Museum Gardens

The Montgomery Museum Garden was started in 1998 by New River Valley Master Gardeners.  Following a plan designed by Dr. Jerry Pike, the original upper garden was covered in heavy black plastic and planted with perennials, herbs and shrubs.  In 2008 a native plant garden was started below the original garden and each year non-native plants are removed and replaced by native species. And over time the plastic has been removed. No chemicals are used in the garden. Brush piles, standing snags, decaying felled trees remain as habitat.  The garden is in development with volunteers working on several ongoing projects.  It is a joint project of the New River Master Gardeners and Master Naturalist.

The local community uses the gardens for respite, outdoor art exhibits and educational activities.  We grow native plants for sales and donate to local restoration projects and public native gardens.

Heritage Day on the third Saturday in August provides us the opportunity to educate over 200 visitors about gardening and native plant-insect interactions
