Plant Sale 2025 — Baptisia australis

Baptisia australis (Blue False Indigo) is a very showy dense shrub with bluish-purple pea like flowers. The foliage dies back to the ground in winter however, it will reappear in the spring. Plant it in full to part sun in average to moist soils. Once established it will tolerate clay soil and droughts. Baptisia australis grows 2-4′ tall and 3-4′ wide. This plant is slow to settle in because it spends its energy putting down deep roots before concentrating on foliage and blooms.
Because it puts down deep roots be sure to plant it where you want it to stay with room to spread. A good nectar/pollen source for pollinators in particular bumblebees and it’s a host plant to Orange Sulphur, Frosted Elfin (not commonly found in home gardens), Eastern Tailed-blue butterflies, Wild Indigo Duskywings and Hoary Edge Skippers.
