Murray Fisher has devoted his entire life to studying, interpreting, protecting and restoring the natural world; and endeavoring to inspire others to do the same. This passion began and was nurtured on a Virginia farm where he was raised by parents who instilled and promoted these values in their children and their community.

Early in his career, Murray worked as an environmental educator for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, and later as a researcher for the Wildlife Conservation Society. After graduating from Vanderbilt University he moved to New York to work for Riverkeeper as an AmeriCorps member. His role expanded to helping grow the network of River, Sound and Baykeepers throughout the world, which eventually became the Waterkeeper Alliance.

He left Waterkeeper to create the New York Harbor School, a public, marine science and technology high school in New York City. In 2014, motivated by a desire to restore the Harbor which served as the school’s classroom, he co-founded the Billion Oyster Project, a non-profit committed to engaging New Yorkers in restoring oyster reefs to New York Harbor. He served first as the Executive Director, then as Chairman of the Board until 2022. Murray has spoken at conferences around the world about his experience creating the Harbor School and Billion Oyster Project.

Since moving to Westchester, Murray has been backing a wide range of small businesses that share his mission to protect and restore the planet by focusing on projects we all can complete in our own backyards When he is not working, he is restoring his own backyard with his wife and three kids, where they have observed, identified and cataloged thousands of unique species on iNaturalist.
