The talk will focus on the different ways plants communicate, directly and indirectly.

Rafael Castañeda-Saldaña received his two bachelor’s degrees in Plant Science and Landscape Horticulture from the University of Delaware. His undergraduate research was focused on plant-microbe interactions. The first project looked at a soil dwelling bacteria Bacillus and a model plant Arabidopsis. The findings of this project suggested the bacteria were able to positively influence plant growth as well as an enhanced plant defense against pathogens. His master’s degree has focused on the beneficial bacteria Sinorhizobium with legume plant alfalfa. It focused on identifying the mechanisms for the bacterial movement, specifically the proteins involved. His passion has been growing indoor plants such as orchids, bonsai, and tropical trees. Rafael is currently an Instructor at Concord University in Athens, WV.
