Join Mark and Betty Gatewood along the Madison Run Fire Road to (hopefully) see the Sundial Lupines (Lupinis perennis) in bloom. Expect this walk to cover approximately 2 miles and take around 3 hours. Other things that may be seen and discussed along the way include:

  • The iron furnace history and effects on the landscape (without going to the furnace at this time).
  • A fern found nowhere else in SNP
  • A hemlock grove where NPS and VA Tech are experimenting with two biological controls for hemlock wooly adelgid.
  • A “Kodak Moment” on the prettiest section of Madison Run
  • A selection of flowering plants typical of the acidic soils associated with quartzite.

Please utilize insect repellent or treated clothing prior to the walk. Hiking boots or shoes are recommended (no sandals) along with water, a snack, and a 10X lens (if you have one).

*** This walk is limited to 12 participants. Please register here. (You do not need the “ticket” the website provides, just sign up to reserve your spot)

*** Registration closes 24 hours prior to the event and then driving directions will be sent to participants. ***

If you register and then realize you cannot go, please email Katy (katymeltonsimpson(at)gmail.com).
