Join Ron Hughes of VA Department of Wildlife Resources for an easy 1.5 – 2 mile loop walk on and along an established hiking trail through gentle terrain. The walk will start in a diverse upland forest, gradually dropping in elevation to the floodplain of Turkey Run. The floodplain and adjacent uplands are sites recognized by Virginia Dept. of Conservation and Recreation Division of Natural Heritage as significant ecological forest communities. Seen will be a variety of oaks and hickories along with other hardwoods (including Shumard oak, Quercus shumardii, American elm, Ulmus americana) in a diverse forest with some very large specimens. Dress for the weather and waterproof footwear is recommended. The public is welcome to attend. Sorry, no pets are allowed.
Ron Hughes works for the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources as a Wildlife Biologist. He is a former board member of the Piedmont Chapter of the VNPS and is a member of the Old Rag Master Naturalists. Ron was born and raised in upstate New York where he grew up in the countryside exploring nature. He went to college in N.Y., PA, and N.C. and worked in wildlife research in five different states. Ron has called Virginia home for over 20 years.
