Second Sunday Walk
Chester F. Phelps Wildlife Management Area (WMA)
5669 Sumerduck Road, Remington, VA 22734
The Piedmont Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society invites you to our Second Sunday Walk led by Ron Hughes, Lands and Facilities Manager at C.F. Phelps WMA. Join Ron on an easy stroll through rolling low hills near the Rappahannock River to observe post-frost plants. There will be some plants still remaining, plus dried stalks of earlier fruiting species, a nice trip to contemplate and discuss dormancy and the past growing season.
Meet us at the Pond Parking Area, about one mile from entrance, located near the residence and work center which will be on your right. For more details visit website www.dgif.virginia.gov/wmas/detail.asp.
DIRECTIONS: C.F. Phelps WMA is located near the village of Sumerduck. It can be reached by Rt. 651 (Sumerduck Rd.), either south from Rt. 29 through the Town of Remington, or from Rt. 17, one mile north of Goldvein Post Office. Important Note: VDOT is replacing a bridge on Sumerduck Rd. (Route 651) halfway between Sumerduck and the Rt. 651/US 17 intersection in Goldvein. Coming from Rt. 17 there are detour signs marking the alternate route for Rt. 651. If coming from the Culpeper/Kelly’s Ford/Remington side the bridge construction is not an issue and travel is unobstructed.
If you plan to attend, please RSVP and contact us at piedmontvnps@gmail.com. The Piedmont Chapter will provide the required access permit for the group, but let us know if you already have a permit of your own.
This walk is free and open to everyone. We look forward to seeing you there.
