This is a reminder that our next meeting is November 19 at 6:30 pm in the Garden Auditorium located in the Old Aministration Bldg at Norfolk Botanical Garden (NBG)(The date is earlier due to Thanksgiving.)  It’s a large room with space to social distance.  Masks are required to be worn by NBG so please bring and wear a mask.

We’ll have our annual SEED SWAP at this meeting if you have seeds from NATIVES in your garden to share. Even if you don’t have any seeds to share, you are welcome to take some to expand your own garden with something new and different such as NY Ironweed, Green Eye Coneflower, Clethra Alternifola, Rudbeckia triloba, Penstemon beardtongue, and more.

We will also conduct elections for two officer positions:  Pat Quinn offered to continue as Secretary with everyone’s approval.  We still need a Vice President to fill the vacant position.  If you are familiar with the native plant community in Hampton Roads and are interested to lining up interesting speakers for eight meetings a year (Sept-May with no meeting in December), please contact Steve Stasulis at stasulisss@hotmail.com for more information.

In addition to the seed swap and elections, we’ll be raffling off FREE PLANTS!!  Many of the plants from the 2020 sale/non-sale are starting to go dormant; I will bring a few to the November 19 meeting to raffle them off.

Our speaker for November 19 is Pat Quinn with a presentation covering plants with pollinators.

We will also be ordering some plants from the nursery to pot for next year’s plant sale. We could use volunteers to join in potting them up sometime in the next few weeks.  If you’re interested, please email me at stasulisss@Hotmail.com and I will send you the particulars.

I look forward to seeing you at the November meeting.

Staying Safe at VNPS Meetings

With the Covid-19 pandemic still here, it is necessary to change some of our meeting procedures so that we are following both rules from NBG and suggestions from the CDC. We will still be meeting at the Norfolk Botanical Garden on the fourth Thursday of most months. The Garden Auditorium in the Old Administration Building is limited to an attendance of 40 people. This should not be a problem for us since our attendance is seldom more than 20. The tables will be spaced out with only two chairs at each one. If your party is more than two, you can move the chairs.

NBG requires masks to be worn inside the buildings. So please bring a mask and wear it during the meeting.

We have suspended refreshments until 2021 when, hopefully, the pandemic will be over and the restrictions will be gone. Basically, the NBG green policy does not allow individual disposable bottles or food packaging. The CDC recommends not sharing food or beverages from communal plates or bottles. In other words they are conflicting. You are welcome to bring your own non- disposable beverage container.
