The Cherokee name for Mayapple was OO-NEE-SQUA-TOO-KEY (\u201cit wears a hat\u201d), and the Osage Indian name was CHE-SA-NE-PE-SHA (\u201cit pains the bowels\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>In 1615, the French explorer, Samuel de Champlain, was the first European to record observing Mayapple cultivated in Canada by the Huron Indians.\u00a0 Some common French names include \u201cip\u00e9cacuanha de la Caroline,\u201d referring to the purgative properties of the plant.<\/p>\n<p>In England, the use of Mayapple as a purgative led to the common name of American mandrake (the European mandrake, a different plant, was a commonly used purgative), and it is thought Nicholas Culpeper included American mandrake in his famous herbal of the late 1600s.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vnps.org\/wp\/pwws\/files\/2012\/09\/021808Catesby_24CarolinaTurtleDove.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright lazyload\" title=\"021808Catesby_24CarolinaTurtleDove\" alt=\"\" data-src=\"https:\/\/vnps.org\/wp\/pwws\/files\/2012\/09\/021808Catesby_24CarolinaTurtleDove-222x300.jpg\" width=\"222\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 222px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 222\/300;\" \/><\/a>In 1700, the French botanist Joseph Pitton de Tournefort gave Mayapple the Latin name of<em>Anapodophyllum canadense morini<\/em>\u00a0with the genus meaning \u201cduck\u2019s foot leaf \u201d \u00a0\u00a0In 1789, A.L. deJussieu\u00a0 proposed the Barberry family (<em>Berberidaceae<\/em>), but placed Mayapple in the Buttercup family (<em>Ranunculaceae<\/em>). \u00a0Mark Catesby used the name<em>Anapodophyllum canadense<\/em>\u00a0in 1730 when he<em>\u00a0<\/em>sent Mayapple specimens to Linnaeus. By 1753, Linnaeus had shortened the genus name from\u00a0<em>Anapodophyllum<\/em>to\u00a0<em>Podophyllum<\/em>\u00a0and changed the species name (epithet) to\u00a0<em>peltatum<\/em>\u00a0but placed Mayapple in family that is now part of the Poppy family (<em>Papveraceae<\/em>).\u00a0 In the 1762\u00a0<em>Flora Virginica<\/em>\u00a0(second edition), Mayapple appears as\u00a0<em>Podophyllum<\/em>\u00a0foliis pellatis lobatis.\u00a0 By the 1800s the American botanist Asa Gray in his famous\u00a0<em>Gray\u2019s Manual of Botany<\/em>\u00a0had placed Mayapple in its present barberry family (<em>Berberidaceae<\/em>).\u00a0 Recent DNA analysis has shown Mayapple to be properly placed in\u00a0<em>Berberidaceae.<\/em>\u00a0 It has been a long and changing road to the present classification of this special plant!<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\".\/botanizing-with-marion\/mayapple-plant-profile\/\">MAYAPPLE (<em>Podophyllum peltatum<\/em>) Plant Profile<\/a><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u2013<em>Marion Blois Lobstein,\u00a0<\/em>Botany Chair, Prince William Wildflower Society, Assoc.
