The Riverbend Park floodplain is a great example of the Potomac River Gorge’s rich variety of spring ephemerals—in fact, this diversity and the large display of bluebells has earned Riverbend a place on the VNPS Registry. Alongside the trails we will find spring beauty (Claytonia virginica), Dutchman’s breeches (Dicentra cucullaria) and squirrel corn (Dicentra canadensis), yellow trout lily. (Erythronium americanum), and bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis). Our walk on April 7 will come one day after the park’s annual Virginia bluebell (Mertensia virginica) festival, and chances are we will see the expansive stands of bluebells that emerge there every spring.
