Virginia Master Naturalists – New River Valley Chapter<\/a><\/p>\t\t\n\t

The Montgomery Museum Garden was started in 1998 by New River Valley Master Gardeners.\u00a0 Following\u00a0a plan designed by Dr. Jerry Pike, the original upper garden was covered in heavy black plastic and planted with perennials, herbs and shrubs.\u00a0\u00a0In 2008 a native plant garden was started below the original garden and each year non-native plants are removed and replaced by native species. And over time the plastic has been removed. No chemicals are used in the garden. Brush piles, standing snags, decaying felled trees remain as habitat.\u00a0 The garden is in development with volunteers working on several ongoing projects.\u00a0 It is a joint project of the New River Master Gardeners and Master Naturalist.<\/p>\n

The local community uses the gardens for respite, outdoor art exhibits and educational\u00a0activities.\u00a0 We grow native plants for sales and donate to local restoration projects and public native gardens.<\/p>\n
