Park Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The New River Chapter launched its Wong Park Project (WPP) with a picnic at Wong Park in Blacksburg on September 21, 2014.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The WPP is an educational effort to let people know that there is a chapter of the Native Plant Society in the Blacksburg area by furnishing public displays for a soon to be constructed bulletin board at a public park.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">David Darnell, who works for the Town of Blacksburg, has negotiated with the Parks Department to have the town install the outdoor bulletin board next to one of the trails in the park.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The chapter will use it to post educational material about native plants. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">One of the first displays we will make is of the wildflowers that grow in Wong Park in the various seasons.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Other options include signs teaching folks:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>what &#8216;real&#8217; ragweed looks like<\/li>\n<li>how to maintain a wildllower meadow<\/li>\n<li>best ways to get rid of invasive species.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Wong Park is about 9 acres, with a good portion of the land in an un-mowed meadow.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Both grassy and paved trails are in the park, and many people come there to walk their dogs, enjoy a picnic, or just enjoy a stroll.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is on Wilson Street just a few blocks from downtown Blacksburg.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_144\" style=\"width: 603px\" class=\"wp-caption class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The day of our picnic we started with a walk around the park, led by David. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>He pointed out native trees and wildflowers, as well as some of the invasives that need attention. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Several goldenrod species,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><strong>blue fall aster, (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae),<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 orange coneflower, (Rudbeckia fulgida), and\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0green-headed coneflower, (Rudbeckia laciniata )<\/strong> were prominent in the meadow.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_145\" style=\"width: 629px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a
