The John Clayton Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society will hold its first chapter meeting of the year on Thursday January 16th at 7 pm at the James City County Recreation Center. The speaker will be Helen Hamilton, local native plant expert and author of Wildflowers & Grasses of Virginia’s Coastal Plain, and Ferns & Mosses of Virginia’s Coastal Plain. Helen’s talk on plant senses and how some plants can hear, see, smell, feel, and taste is sure to be interesting:

We know plants move their leaves toward light, bananas can ripen
apples, and beans will climb up garden supports. How do plants see
light? Why do bananas affect apples? What makes vines curl around a
post? Recent researches have begun to elucidate how plants can
apparently sense and respond to their environments. How closely do the
actions of plants match ours in sensing sources of water, light, and
food? Are plants intelligent? Can they remember?

Please join us. The meeting is free and open to the public.
