Commonly called Virginia Bluebells, its also known as Virginia Cowslip, Roanoke-bells, Eastern Bluebells and Lungwort Oysterleaf.<br \/>\nWhen the leaves emerge they are a lovely shade of purple, quickly turning a medium green as they increase in size. Although the flowers are usually light blue, persistently pink or white-flowered forms have occurred. The light blue blooms start out pink as buds, changing to blue, nodding bell shaped flowers as<a href=\"https:\/\/vnps.org\/jefferson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/03\/web6bluebell.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1188 alignright lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/vnps.org\/jefferson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/03\/web6bluebell-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"White Bluebells\" width=\"144\" height=\"192\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/vnps.org\/jefferson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/03\/web6bluebell-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/vnps.org\/jefferson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/03\/web6bluebell-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/vnps.org\/jefferson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/03\/web6bluebell-900x1200.jpg 900w, https:\/\/vnps.org\/jefferson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/03\/web6bluebell.jpg 1536w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 144px) 100vw, 144px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 144px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 144\/192;\" \/><\/a> they mature and once pollinated turn pink again. The cluster of flowers are very showy. Blooming lasts about three weeks in April after which <em>Mertensia virginica <\/em>being spring ephemerals disappear in early summer. Pair with other natives such as Maidenhair Fern (<em>Adiantum pedatum<\/em>), Christmas Fern (<em>Polystichum acrostichoides<\/em>), Woodpoppy (<em>Stylophorum diphyllum<\/em>), Bugbane (<em>Cimicifuga racemosa<\/em>) or Jacob&#8217;s Ladder (<em>Polemonium reptans<\/em>) to fill in the space once the plants disappear (remembering to mark where the<em> Mertensia virginica<\/em> is planted while the plants are above ground so you don\u2019t damage them when planting around them later). Locally common throughout the mountains (lower elevations only) and the Piedmont.&nbsp; It will colonize in optimum conditions, seeding freely. Consider planting <em>Mertensia virginica<\/em> for pollinators.
