VNPS is offering a kayak trip down a portion of Dragon Run in Middlesex County in the Coastal Plain. The special trip is offered through the non-profit group Friends of Dragon Run.
A donation of $50 is requested, and a 9.5-foot stable kayak, paddle, and personal flotation device are supplied. There will be a limit of nine people, and the trip will be led by knowledgeable guides with botanical knowledge. Little kayaking experience is needed as the trip is on a small slow-moving stream. Viburnums, Iris, Sweetspire, Fetterbush (awful name), Resurrection Fern, Pickerelweed, Spatterdock, Arrow-arum and more should be blooming away and seen up close.
Dragon Run is a Bald Cypress-Tupelo Swamp in a 140 sq. mile watershed that has remained largely untouched by any industry/development. In a study of 232 Chesapeake Bay aquatic ecosystems by The Nature Conservancy and the Smithsonian Institution, it was ranked second in ecological significance.
We have two dates scheduled for this unique field trip: Wednesday, May 8 and Wednesday, May 15. Meeting time will be 10am for an approximately 3-hour trip. For those interested, a walk will also be offered after kayaking.
The meeting location is close to Mascot, Virginia, for those who wish to check distance.
Reservations, further questions, local lodging or more details on either or both forays can be sent to Kevin Howe, VNPS First Vice President, at kevinmhowe@gmail.com.
