Mount Rogers has several areas over 5,000 feet in elevation. We will drive to Whitetop and discuss the ecology of the bald area. From there we will walk the Appalachian trail to Elk Garden. This is a three-mile section which is all downhill. The trail takes us from mountain bald through a birch forest. It is quite different than any areas we have in Roanoke. This is one of the Jefferson National Forest’s unique treasures. Flowers are in great abundance. Along with the flowers we will see some boreal forest and sphagnum areas as well. Although it is a long day, it is well worth it.

Leader: Butch Kelly 540-384-7429 or butch2410msn.com. Bring sturdy boots that can withstand moisture. Bring layers it could be quite cool. Rain gear is a must. This habitat can change quickly. Bring lots of water and lunch. We will eat along the trail. Walking sticks are helpful.

Meet: 8:00 a.m. at the Orange Market in Salem, off Thompson Memorial Blvd, off I81 exit 141.
