Imagine a glade of ferns, still cool in a summer morning, a hint of decomposing wood in the air. That’s our walk with renowned fern specialist Carl Taylor, as we join him to identify some of the 18 or so fern species native to Scott’s Run Nature Preserve. We can expect common ferns such as Christmas fern (Polystichum acrostichoides), New York fern (Parathelypteris noveboracensis), and sensitive fern (Onoclea sensibilis), to species less common in the coastal plain such as lowland brittle fern (Cystopteris protrusa) and rock polypody (Polypodium virginianum). This is a moderate walk, but keep in mind the weather and tick exposure when deciding what to wear.
